[One] milestone of my morality happened as I entered into work with the criminal justice system for an organization that provided pretrial diversion as an alternative to jail sentencing. It was then that I was awakened to the fallibility of the American justice system, the sets of laws that govern our daily lives and the violent enforcement of those laws. It was around the same time that Oscar Grant got shot in Oakland and the same time that I attended my first anti-war rally in San Francisco. It was around the same time that I became a disciple of the hip hop culture and began to question all that taught me right from wrong. This was the beginning of my distaste for White American culture…
What did these things do to affect my morality? They enticed me to think critically and to question dogma rather than accept it as being absolute truth. These events and influences taught me that morality is in the heart of critical curiosity and in the mind of experiential education, not simply the act of being fed information from a biased source.
